Abstract

Purpose. To analyse the contemporary understanding of the goals and tasks of electromagnetic warfare, the state of radio communication systems employed by the armed forces of the Russian Federation at the tactical level of command and control, as well as existing technologies of electronic reconnaissance and electronic jamming of HF and VHF radio communication systems.

Method. The methodological basis of the research includes analysis, synthesis, deduction, comparative methods, and elements of systems analysis. Analytical methods are used to process open-source information and technical data, enabling the systematization of modern approaches to electromagnetic warfare. Synthesis and deduction are applied to generalize empirical material and develop conclusions regarding vulnerabilities of radio communication systems. Comparative analysis is employed to assess electronic reconnaissance and jamming complexes in service with partner nations and the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

Findings. The article demonstrates that modern electromagnetic warfare capabilities significantly expand the potential for countering enemy radio communication systems and disrupting their command and control. It is substantiated that a key role is played by minimizing the “detection–analysis–attack (neutralization)” cycle, including through the integration of electronic reconnaissance and jamming systems into a unified information space.

Practical Implications. The findings can be used to justify the selection of advanced electronic reconnaissance and jamming complexes, support technical equipping plans for electronic warfare units, and inform training programmes for personnel of relevant components of the Defence Forces of Ukraine. The research further develops scientific approaches to the selection of technologies for radio reconnaissance and jamming of HF and VHF communication systems.

Paper type: Analytical, review-conceptual.
